We’ve teamed up with our friends at Globetops to help NYC underserved youth continue education at home, during these difficult times. You can help!
WHAT IS GLOBETOPS?
Globetops is a NY-based organization, unleashing creativity and accelerating community impact by connecting people who have laptops they’re not using anymore with youth and social entrepreneurs without access.
They’ve long been recycling laptop donations to connect those around the world in need. With New York City hit hard by COVID-19, the need is on our doorstep. The youth right here in our community need the tools to continue education at home.
NYC has the largest school system in the United States. The Department of Education estimates that out of 1.1 million kids, 300,000 lack access to the devices they need for remote learning. The city has been distributing devices, but there is still a huge deficit of low-income students who are struggling to not be left behind
WHAT CAN YOU DO?
In the past few weeks Globetops has been receiving an enormous outpouring of requests for computers from schools and teachers. Organizations we support, who have direct lines and personal relationships with underserved youth (such as Go Sports & Hoods to Woods) are helping directly identify those in need in the community.
Many in our community are sheltering at home and looking for meaningful ways to help. You can give new life to the laptops and tablets sitting in your closet, by donating and make a difference in the lives of these kids. With the joint powers of community and transportation, we’ve identified a structure with mobile, sterile pick-up units at the ready, along with the infrastructure to refurbish donated laptops then distribute them to students across the city.
You can help now, it’s easy, safe and will make a direct impact!
• We partnered with a Covid-response organization to do free safe pickups in NYC that DO NOT require person-to-person interaction.
• We are connected to schools and teachers in need.
• We’re set up to safely wipe all data and sterilize all computers before they go to kids.
WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT NOW?
NYC schools will remain closed for the remainder of the school year and there is no certainty on when students will return to classes. While school continues from home, those who are ill prepared are in danger of being left behind. Addressing the digital divide is even more crucial than ever.
Some students aren’t participating in classes at all, or are trying to do homework from their parents’ cell phones. There is imminent danger for underserved youth and their ability to keep up with education during these difficult times.
The closure of schools and the need to homeschool is only exacerbating this problem. We can directly grant students these tools that we maybe taking for granted, transform their lives, unleash their creativity, promote education and leave a real community impact.
DON’T HAVE AN OLD DEVICE & WANT TO HELP?
Funds also help make it happen. We anticipate that through existing networks, we will receive at least 500 laptops in the next few weeks. It costs $100/laptop to get it into a student’s hands. This includes sterilization, data security, basic repairs, a laptop bag, shipping and labor.
Any amount will help the cause!
To help further support the cause, any donation of $100 or more, we’ll send you a limited edition OvR x Globetops T-shirt that you can rock and literally wear your support on your sleeves. Just add “OvRxGlobetops” as a note in your donation.
What are you going to do with that old laptop or tablet? Recycle it and support NYC students in need!
