Community Outreach

OvR has always tried to make sure that while we’re out there having a good time shredding our brains out on the hill, we remember to give back to the community. In this spirit, I’m proud to give you a sneak peak on some of the community efforts we’ve been honored to be a part of this season.

We also realize so many of you are already involved and have been so giving during the recent Storm Relief Efforts. We hope the information we provide can help you find new outlets to help and bring light to foundations that are doing SO much for our community.

Today, I’d like to feature three organizations that are geared towards helping NYC’s under-served youth find confidence, explore the outdoors and promote self development through board sports and positive mentorship: STOKED, Chill and Hoods to Woods.

STOKED

STOKED is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to promote personal development, academic achievement, and healthy living to under-served youth through action sports culture- including snowboarding, surfing and skateboarding.

Last weekend, 2 buses mobilized by OvR and filled with STOKED volunteers headed out to Rockaway to help in the Sandy Relief Efforts. The pictures from STOKED to OvRcome Sandy speak for themselves- and look forward to more in the coming weeks, as winter and frost approaches, as we try to beat the clock. Chill

The Chill Foundation is a non-profit youth development program that provides opportunities at no cost for at-risk and under-served youth to build self-esteem and life skills through board sports. The Chill Foundation uses board sports to motivate youth to accomplish exciting new goals, while teaching them important life skills focusing on patience, persistence, responsibility, courage, respect and pride – the weekly themes of the program. The New York City Chill program began in 1998, and continues to bring youth, predominantly from low-income neighborhoods in Brooklyn and the Bronx, to Mountain Creek in New Jersey during the winters.

Look for events this season to raise funding and get more of the community involved.

Hoods to Woods Foundation

The Hoods to Woods Foundation is a not for profit 501(c)(3) organization that promotes awareness of the outdoors to inner city children ages 13 – 19 through year-round activities such as snowboarding, indoor rock climbing, camping, hiking and more! Using environmental awareness, writing and the use of new media tools that allow youth to document their outdoor experience, the program is designed to build confidence and facilitate individual discovery.

Hoods to Woods was founded by Brian Paupaw, an avid Snowboarder who documented his journeys from the inner-city streets of Bedford-Stuyvesant Brooklyn to the deep-powder backcountry of North and South America. Through Brian’s self-told story, we experience how the culture of snowboarding transformed a life once stifled by the social constraints of the streets, into one that’s only bound by the edge of a mountain.
